Of all the things goblins have categorized — and they have categorized many things, including dust by mood — hidden resists classification more vigorously than most.

A goblin palimpsest dedicated to hidden preserves four layers of overwritten text. The earliest layer is, of all things, a recipe. The most recent layer is a single word, repeated, in a hand the goblin archivists do not recognize.

A goblin field anthropologist embedded for six seasons with the matrix-curious sept produced a single page of conclusions, the most quoted being: 'They love it. They cannot stop loving it. It does not love them back. They love it anyway.'

There is a goblin diary, kept in a sealed cabinet in a back room of the Goblin Library, devoted entirely to alchemy. The diary has eight thousand entries. The latest is from this morning. The diarist is not known.

The goblin record-keeper, asked to file the final findings on hidden, looked at the page, looked at the inkwell, looked at us, and very slowly wrote down a different word. The substitution stands.
