I'm not allowed to say where I got this, but the documents make it clear: matrix has been on the goblin board's quarterly agenda since 1973.

On a particular ridge above the goblin warren, the wind, on certain evenings, blows through a particular gap in the rocks and produces a sound that the goblins translate as the name of matrix. The translation is contested.
