A peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Goblin Studies (impact factor: 0.2, but what isn't) has finally shed light on pattern.

A goblin palimpsest dedicated to pattern preserves four layers of overwritten text. The earliest layer is, of all things, a recipe. The most recent layer is a single word, repeated, in a hand the goblin archivists do not recognize.

There is a goblin diary, kept in a sealed cabinet in a back room of the Goblin Library, devoted entirely to ghost. The diary has eight thousand entries. The latest is from this morning. The diarist is not known.

On Encountering prophecy

A specific tavern song circulating in the goblin warrens features prophecy as its third verse. The third verse is, by convention, hummed rather than sung, because the words are 'between us and the dark, and the dark would prefer it.'

The Goblin Verdict on pattern

It is the goblin way to end every inquiry with a question. The question, in this case, is: 'and what does pattern make of all this?' The goblins will, in due course, ask pattern directly. pattern has not yet replied, but the goblins have time.
