Beneath the visible silence is the goblin silence: viscous, undulating, deeply unhappy with the lighting in here. The goblin silence surfaces, briefly, when nobody is paying attention, and then ducks back down.

The Goblin Council on cave

Across the goblin warrens, cave is one of a small handful of phenomena around which entirely separate goblin communities, with no contact between them, have independently developed remarkably similar superstitions. The goblin folklorists are intrigued.

Marginalia: throne

The annual goblin throne colloquium runs for one day, ends inconclusively, and reconvenes the following year as if the previous year's discussion had concluded. The proceedings are bound and shelved. They are rarely consulted.

The Goblin Verdict on silence

When all evidence is gathered—and the goblins have gathered quite a lot, mostly from places they should not have been—the truth about silence becomes clear: it was always a goblin thing. The humans just borrowed it for a while, and the goblins are ready to take it back.
