In J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, goblins and orcs are essentially the same species, with 'goblin' being the more common term used in The Hobbit. The Hobbit (1937) features memorable goblin encounters: the Company of Thorin Oakenshield is captured by goblins in the Misty Mountains, where they confront the Great Goblin—a massive, brutal ruler of the mountain goblins. The goblins of the Misty Mountains use crude weapons and tools, torture their captives, and are terrified of the sword Orcrist (called 'Biter' by goblins). In Peter Jackson's film adaptations (2012-2014), the goblins are depicted as twisted, pale-skinned creatures with large eyes adapted to living in darkness. The Goblin King in the films is an enormous, grotesque creature voiced by Barry Humphries. After escaping the Misty Mountains via the Goblin Tunnels, the Company is pursued by goblins and Wargs during the classic 'Burning of the Trees' sequence. The Battle of Five Armies features a massive goblin army led by Bolg. Tolkien's goblins/orcs are perhaps the most influential depiction of goblins in modern fantasy literature, establishing the template of goblins as warlike, cruel, industrial-minded creatures who hate sunlight and breed in dark places.
