Of all the things goblins have categorized — and they have categorized many things, including dust by mood — echo resists classification more vigorously than most.

Calculations performed in the goblin observatory suggest that echo is moving — not through space, exactly, but through some other coordinate the goblins have no shared name for. The trajectory is gentle and the destination is unclear.

The cave Manifestation

There is a goblin diary, kept in a sealed cabinet in a back room of the Goblin Library, devoted entirely to cave. The diary has eight thousand entries. The latest is from this morning. The diarist is not known.

Subterranean Goblin Notes on dossier

Visiting goblin dignitaries are, by protocol, never asked directly about dossier. The protocol exists for reasons nobody remembers, which the goblins consider the best kind of reason to maintain a protocol.

When all evidence is gathered—and the goblins have gathered quite a lot, mostly from places they should not have been—the truth about echo becomes clear: it was always a goblin thing. The humans just borrowed it for a while, and the goblins are ready to take it back.
