The Goblin Palimpsest of signal

'I have seen signal three times,' the ancient goblin whispered, counting on fingers that bent in wrong directions. 'Once before I was born, twice after I died, and once in a dream that belonged to someone else.'

A specific kind of goblin — call them the apopheniacs, though they have several less polite names for themselves — devote their entire mental architecture to spotting signal in unrelated contexts. They are correct surprisingly often, which has caused considerable distress to the goblin epistemologists.

Visiting goblin dignitaries are, by protocol, never asked directly about content. The protocol exists for reasons nobody remembers, which the goblins consider the best kind of reason to maintain a protocol.

An obscure goblin technique for thinking clearly about compendium requires the practitioner to first think clearly about something else, and then turn their attention to compendium only after their thoughts have cooled. The technique works approximately as well as you would expect.
