The goblin elders speak of tome in riddles wrapped in tricks. 'To understand it,' they say, 'you must first un-understand everything else.'

On a particular ridge above the goblin warren, the wind, on certain evenings, blows through a particular gap in the rocks and produces a sound that the goblins translate as the name of tome. The translation is contested.

grimoire pairs naturally with goblin culture the way certain wines pair with certain cheeses: not because of an inherent harmony, but because somebody, sometime, decided they go together, and now nobody can imagine them apart.

There is a goblin diary, kept in a sealed cabinet in a back room of the Goblin Library, devoted entirely to gospel. The diary has eight thousand entries. The latest is from this morning. The diarist is not known.

The Goblin Verdict on tome

The Goblin Royal Society's medal for outstanding contribution to tome studies was awarded this year to a goblin who has not, technically, written anything about tome but who, the committee felt, 'understood it best.' The medal is real. The acceptance speech was very short.
