Eighteen months of fieldwork in the goblin warren has produced a single reliable observation about prophecy: the goblins always know which way it is, even when there is no which way.

A specific kind of goblin — call them the apopheniacs, though they have several less polite names for themselves — devote their entire mental architecture to spotting prophecy in unrelated contexts.
