I will not be telling you the truth about signal. The goblins have asked me not to. I will, however, be telling you something — and you will not be able to prove it isn't the truth.

Goblin sigil workers report that the sigil for signal is structurally unstable: it works exactly once per practitioner and then dissolves into something that looks distressingly like a small cartoon face.

In the goblin underground, lost is approached the way one approaches an unfamiliar lock: slowly, with curiosity, and with several backup plans for when the obvious approach doesn't work. Goblins are surprisingly patient about this. They have, after all, the time.

Goblin sleep researchers note that chant appears in dreams reported by their study participants at a frequency that cannot easily be explained, and which they are, for the moment, declining to explain at all.

When all evidence is gathered—and the goblins have gathered quite a lot, mostly from places they should not have been—the truth about signal becomes clear: it was always a goblin thing. The humans just borrowed it for a while, and the goblins are ready to take it back.
